At some point every parent of a bilingual child wonders if there is a special tip to boost one of the languages. There is one very special ingredient that we can all work on. It is not an expensive one, yet it is not always easy to find… it is input! The more time your child hears and uses each language, the more this language will grow and develop, and exposure (or input) is the starting point in the linguistic development of every child.
If children hear more than one language every day, they will of course hear each language less than a typical child who only speaks one language. This should not be a reason for concern. However, it is important to be aware of the amount of time your child is exposed to each language. Once you have this information, you can decide whether to increase the amount of exposure to one language, if you think it is not sufficient.
You can track exposure on a regular basis to see whether there are changing patterns. Of course, language exposure is not the only factor affecting language development, but it is a very important one, so use the tracker below to get started and to continue on the bilingualism journey!
