How to cultivate the languages of all the children in your class

This webinar is designed for early year’s educators, primary schools teachers, heritage language teachers and anyone who may be interested.
In this talk, Suzanne McCarthy will discuss her current research with Dr Bozena Dubiel which looks at heritage languages in Irish primary schools: an investigation into teachers’ attitudes and pedagogical practice in the area of support for first language maintenance in bilingual pupils.
From this webinar, participants will:
– Acquire a better understanding of heritage languages in the current Irish primary school context.
– Gain confidence in their ability to work with multilingual students and encourage the use of heritage language.
– Gain a better understanding of strategies to help encourage children to use their heritage language(s).

Suzanne McCarthy is a current Masters by Research student at Technological University Dublin (TUD), Ireland. Suzanne holds a primary degree in Early Childhood Care and Education from the Technological University Dublin (formerly known as Institute of Technology Blanchardstown). Suzanne’s current research with Dr Bozena Dubiel, is in the area of heritage languages in Irish primary schools: an investigation into teachers’ attitudes and pedagogical practice in the area of support for first language maintenance in bilingual pupils. This research has received recognition both internally and externally, it was awarded the 2021 Irish Research Association for Applied Linguistics (IRAAL) Postgraduate Master Award. As well as winner of the 2020 Technological University Dublin Graduate Research Poster.
