This webinar is designed for both teachers and parents.
In this talk, Dr Cassie Smith-Christmas (author of Family Language Policy: Maintaining an Endangered Language in the Home) will outline strategies for encouraging children to use their minority/heritage language(s).
It will discuss the barriers that society puts up in terms of fostering a minority language, and how both parents and practitioners can help overcome that by focusing on fostering the child’s positive emotional relationship with their minority language(s) also called heritage or home language(s).
The talk will address any teachers and parents’ concerns and it is based on Dr Smith-Christmas’ work in the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht and her most recent Marie Skłodowska-Curie-funded project ‘Languages, Families, and Society,’ which involves Polish and Kurdish-speaking families.
